Jim Rogers : The Best Opportunities are in Agriculture

Agriculture is probably where the best opportunities are,”
“I’m not buying rice and sugar at the moment but some of these things are down a lot from their all-time highs. There’s potential opportunities out there.” Rogers, who correctly predicted a commodities rally in 1999, said in an interview in Singapore on Thursday.

Agriculture : The Best Commodities pick to make

“In 1987 stocks were down 40-80 percent worldwide and it took a long time for it to get above pre-correction levels but the bull market was not over,” said Rogers. “We are seeing the same normal correction happening in commodities now. But we have not seen enough supply come on stream yet in any commodities sector, except maybe iron ore or something like that, to bring supply and demand back in balance.”
Agriculture is the best commodities pick to make and palladium is also another great investment to make since it’s in a “depressed” state right now, Rogers said. At the time of this writing, palladium is trading at just under $850. Over the past year, palladium has remained steady and has increase by approximately $100 in value. - in a recent interview with Bullion Desk

Jim Rogers: Palladium & Agriculture Best Investments in 2014

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Bullion Desk late last week, Rogers discussed how most bull markets come with stages of consolidation and hindrances and the commodity market is really no different. Rogers noted that there have been corrections in equities between years 1982 and 2000 and there are parallels between the stock market then and the commodity market now.
“In 1987 stocks were down 40-80 percent worldwide and it took a long time for it to get above pre-correction levels but the bull market was not over,” said Rogers.
“We are seeing the same normal correction happening in commodities now. But we have not seen enough supply come on stream yet in any commodities sector, except maybe iron ore or something like that, to bring supply and demand back in balance.”“Governments are still printing money and this has gone on for much longer than anyone expected, which could help fuel the commodities boom,”  Rogers added .
Agriculture is the best commodities pick to make and palladium is also another great investment to make since it’s in a “depressed” state right now, Rogers said.

If You Are in Agriculture in China, You’ll be too busy Making Money

Turning to Asia and the economy everyone’s focused on: China. You’re on record saying that the economic slowdown in China won’t get too serious. Do you maintain that view?

Jim Rogers : I’m not sure where I said that. Where did I say that?

You’ve said that there’s unlikely to be an economic crash like famed short-seller, Jim Chanos, and others are forecasting.

Jim Rogers : That’s not right. What I’ve said is that China is the next great country in the world. There’ll certainly be setbacks along the way.
In the 19th century as America was rising to power, it had 15 depressions, a horrible Civil War, massacres in the streets and little in the way of human rights. And yet, America turned out to be pretty successful.
China will have setbacks along the way. I have no idea what, when, why or how. But China is the largest creditor nation in the world and if and when they have setbacks, I would rather be investing money with creditor nations such as China than debtor nations.
I have frequently said that we’ll have people in the real estate business going bankrupt in China because the government is trying to cool off that particular sector. But on the other hand, other parts of the Chinese economy will continue to do extremely well.
If you’re in agriculture in China, you won’t know whether real estate speculators in Shanghai are going broke because you’ll be too busy making money yourself.  - in Asia Money Masters – May 2014

Agriculture is going through the roof this year

As you may know agriculture is going through the roof this year. I suspect that is going to continue because war and tensions are not good for anything but they are good for commodities, especially agriculture.

Agriculture’s been a terrible business for 30 years

“Agriculture’s been a terrible business for 30 years. It is now beginning to get better,” global investor Jim Rogers said Tuesday, on BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program. “If you want to make a lot of money in the future — which many people do — you should learn to drive a tractor.”

Agriculture: The World Is Facing A Crisis

More people in America study Public Relations than study agriculture. So, we have low inventories, we are running out of farmers. The world is facing a crisis.

AGRICULTURE : One of the Best Investments over the next Decades

Are you bullish about anything?

Jim Rogers : I think agriculture is going to be one of the best investments over the next few decades. The world has consumed more than it has produced for much of the last decade, so inventories are near historic lows. The average farmer is 58 in the U.S. and Australia, 66 in Japan. Old farmers are dying or retiring, and young people aren't going into agriculture. Young Americans go into PR, not agriculture. Prices have to go much higher to attract labor, management, capital or we're not going to have enough food in the long run. - in a recent Barron's interview

This is How Jim Rogers Invests in Agriculture

So how do you invest in agriculture?

Jim Rogers : I could buy farmland and become a farmer—although I would be hopeless at it—or buy farmland and lease it out. Buy shares in farms, farm equipment, fertilizer and seed companies that trade on exchanges around the world. Stock markets in agriculture-producing countries should do better than those in agriculture-importing ones. Retailers, restaurants, banks in agricultural areas will do well. Buy a vacation home on a lake in Iowa, not Massachusetts. And there are listed indexes like the RJA or the RGRA. [The RJA, or Elements Rogers Agriculture Total Return exchange-traded note, tracks the Rogers International Commodity Index, which Rogers designed. The RGRA is the RBS Rogers Enhanced Agriculture ETN]. - in a recent interview with Barron's

Jim Rogers Optimistic About Agriculture

Unless the price of agricultural goods goes up a lot, we are not going to have any farmers at any price. Something has to attract people into the agricultural business and the only thing that will is higher profitability and that means higher prices whether we like it or not. I cannot tell you how optimistic I am about agriculture going forward.

Jim Rogers : Agriculture is a great long-term story

Fusion: As for other commodities, are there any you see as a buy ? IWe know you like agriculture.

Jim Rogers : Before we talk agriculture, I would look at natural gas, as any commodity that has that big a collapse should be looked at.  Agriculture is a great long-term story. We have been consuming more than we’re producing over the last 10 years, so the inventories are near historic lows. Agriculture has been a terrible business for many years. We’re running out of farmers. The average age of farmers is 58 in the US, 66 in Japan. Young people are not going into the ag business. Unless something dramatic happens, we will have a crisis, as we need people to go into the fields to produce this stuff. Everything cannot happen with automation.

Agriculture : Consumption Goes higher and faster than Production does

Jim Rogers : In 1987 stocks around the globe fell 40% and many people said the bull market was over. Then in 1989, 1990, 1994, 1997, 1998 there were many times when stocks collapsed and everybody was convinced the bull market was over. The bull market wasn’t over. It eventually ended in a bubble.

In my view that’s happening with commodities. I don’t see major sources of new supply coming in on stream. Most commodities don’t have massive new supply yet. For instance, agriculture has produced record levels for the past few years and yet inventories are the lowest in 40 years because consumption keeps going higher and higher, faster than production does.

We have serious fundamental problems developing in agriculture. I don’t see enough new supply to cause the bull market to end other than a temporary consolidation, especially since so many people are convinced and quick to rush out and write that the bull market is over. But we’ll see.

Jim Rogers More optimistic about Agriculture than most other things

ET Now: Agricultural commodities have not been able to sustain at higher levels. Coffee, corn, soyabean, rice all of them have declined from the highs they made earlier this year. How should one approach agri commodity as a group now?

Jim Rogers: Well, I am more optimistic about agriculture than most other things. Inventories of agriculture products are near historic lows, may be we will have great crops everywhere this year and they will stay down, but inventories are near historic lows. We are running out of farmers, the average age of farmers is getting very old throughout the world. So I am still extremely optimistic about agriculture on a secular picture.

Jim Rogers Most Optimistic About Agriculture

Jim Rogers : “With agriculture, you know, we’ve consumed more than we’ve produced for the last 10 years or so,” “So, inventories are near historic lows, which means that – if something goes wrong – we’re going to have serious problems. And even if something goes right, you’ve got to replenish the inventories.” This means another year of drought would be very worrisome and prices would soar. Even a good crop year only means that the world gets to restock some of its depleted grain inventories. That is why Rogers told Money Morning that “the price of agriculture has to go up a lot, or we’re not going to have any food at any price.” - in Money Morning

Agriculture prices would be the best performers amongst Commodities

-ET Now: There are three key classifications for commodities -- precious, industrial and agri. So out of the three groups I mentioned, which is one group you are bullish on?

Jim Rogers: I own more agriculture than most other commodities because the prices are still astonishingly low and in some cases agriculture has been in a terrible situation for 30 years now. Agriculture prices would be the best performers, I think.

Agriculture, on a historic basis, is very Depressed

Jim Rogers: I guess it would probably be something in agriculture, because agriculture, on a historic basis, is very, very depressed. Over the past 38 years sugar — and I’m not suggesting you buy sugar, I’m using this as an indication — is down 70 percent, I believe, from its all-time high. Well, there’s not much that’s down 70 percent in price since 1974, 37-38 years ago. But sugar is one of those things. So agriculture is where the opportunities are. And let’s see what’s down the most, rather than what’s up the most, as a place to start. - in seeking alpha

Jim Rogers : The Droughts are not the Biggest Problem facing Agriculture today

Jim Rogers : "the drought is a big deal if it's not raining on your farm. But it is good for farmers in other parts of the world. You can't have perfect weather conditions everywhere, every year. And with all the other problems, we're hitting trigger points."
"The world faces serious problems in agriculture. We are facing shortages of everything. The inventories are near historic lows so any problem will have an immediate, profound effect. We are facing a shortage of farmers so any problems will turn into even bigger. ...But any weather problems will have big effects because of the dire situation in farming. Agriculture will be one of the best sectors of the world economy for years as I have told you often." - Jim Rogers said today in a phone interview with businessinsider

Extremely optimistic about Agriculture going forward

Jim Rogers: The Rogers Agricultural Index [line 66] is actually down at this time, which is the reason why I am so extremely optimistic about agriculture going forward. The situation is getting dire. There are no farmers in the world. Things are getting serious, largely because agricultural prices have been so depressed for thirty years that it has not attracted capital, labor, management, or anything else. People want to build golf courses and become stock brokers. In my view, the money is going to be in agriculture going forward because the economics have become so horrible..- in The Motley Fool
