Jim Rogers: India has the worst bureaucracy in the world

Jim Rogers: India has the worst bureaucracy in the world. I really wish India had gotten rid of some of its bureaucratic tangle. I would really like the markets to determine what happens in India, or for that matter, in the world.

I expect sugar prices to be near their low at these prices. I expect prices will go higher. Things in India might be better if the government gets out of the sugar market.

Raghuram Rajan is one of the better central bank governors in the world. But I do not say the RBI is good. I am just saying that it is less bad than other central banks.

Will the RBI Governor cut more rates? I do not have a clue. I am sure it depends — at least partially — on political pressure. It is also going to depend on what happens with the Indian economy and with the coming budget.

I am optimistic that agricultural prices will continue to rise for some time to come.

If the Budget 2015 comes in with sound economics — with spending changes, tax reforms, subsidy cuts, maybe labour reforms — then the rupee may go higher and continue to be a strong currency.

Jim Rogers : The US Dollar Is my largest Currency Position at The Moment

Jim Rogers : I own US dollar at the moment and it's not because I have confidence in the dollar. It's my largest currency position because when more turmoil hits global markets the next time, many people will flee to the US dollar thinking that it's a safe haven as there are no other alternatives. I am not selling my dollars... probably I might buy more.

Jim Rogers : India must open its Economy more

What can India do to retain the interest among foreign investors?

Jim Rogers : India must open its economy more. The major problem about the economy is it's overprotected, and it's one of the reasons why India is not growing as fast as it should be. To buy Indian shares is not easy as it's overprotected and there is a need to change. The authorities should make the currency convertible and the markets open and get away with a lot of regulations and control. Otherwise, India will never live up to its potential. - in Economic Times of India

Oil may stay Down for a while

Jim Rogers : Whenever you have a major crude collapse like the current one, there has to be a rebound. However, normally the prices test the bottom before rebounding. I am not sure if we have seen the bottom yet.

Normally, you have a big rally, and then somewhere along the line it peters out. Then you have another test of the bottom. I suspect we will do so this time too.

Owing to the collapse in oil prices, inflation everywhere is down. Oil may stay down for a while, or even go further down and test the lows.

Maybe prices will go up by a few more dollars. But by spring this year, we will probably see a new test of the bottom.

North Korea is like China in 1980

Jim Rogers: Yes, and Korea, when it’s united, is going to be probably the most exciting country in the world for a decade or two. You know, this will be a country of 75 million people right on the Chinese border with vast, vast natural resources and disciplined, cheap labor up in the North, vast amounts of capital and expertise in the South, and they will be a powerhouse. They’ll run circles around the Japanese, who’ve got gigantic debt and a declining population. The Japanese are against it, by the way. The Japanese are very much against this sort of development, but it’s going to be very, very exciting. And the changes in North Korea – I mean, it’s where China was in 1980, where Myanmar was in 2010. I mean, it’s all happening right now before our eyes. The American press is full of always U.S. propaganda, as we all know, but no, it’s happening as we speak.

US Interest Rates to increase going ahead

The US Federal Reserve may consider hiking interest rates after June. What would be the repercussion on the global financial markets?

Jim Rogers : I do expect US interest rates to increase going ahead, but it would be difficult for me to forecast the exact timing. The US Federal Reserve usually follows market cues. So, I am not too worried about the US interest rate going higher, as when interest rates move higher, many people tend to get afraid and sell their shares, but history shows that it takes 2-3 years for any interest rate hike to really impact the markets. I would advise that one should not worry because that would be a temporary sell-off.   - in Economic Times

Jim Rogers : The European Union is not going to Survive

What is your reading of the situation in the eurozone with so much of uncertainty surrounding Greece?
Jim Rogers : The European Union is not going to survive as there are too many stresses and too many problems. If Greece pulls out, it will not be good. Immediately, there will be turmoil in the stock markets. But, over the longer period, it will be good for world stock markets and currency markets. Countries have been bailing each other out and that cannot happen all the  time. The debt is going higher and higher in the global economy, and the next time if there is a world economic problem, it's going to be much worse. I hope that Greece should pull out of the European Union and default because the world cannot go out bailing every country. It will certainly cause pain, but the sooner you take pain, it will be better. One may remember in Scandinavia, there were debt problems. Many people got bankrupt and there was terrible pain, but after 2-3 years, Scandinavia emerged very strong and vibrant. - in Economic Times

Jim Rogers Optimistic about Agriculture in Ukraine

Nick: Excellent points that you make, Jim. I want to shift gears a little bit. I know you’re a fan of agriculture, and parts of Russia and Ukraine are among the most fertile regions in the world. Investing there is a nice way to get into agriculture and also Russia at the same time. What do you think about companies and stocks that own and operate farmland in that region?

Jim Roger : Well, historically you’re right. Ukraine was one of the major breadbaskets of the world, and some of those vast Russian lands were great breadbaskets at times in history. Communism can and does ruin everything it touches. It ruined Soviet agriculture, but many of those places have great potential and will revive.

I haven’t actually gone and examined the soil myself to see that it’s still fertile, but I assume it is because you see the production numbers. That part of the world should be and will be great agricultural producers again. It’s just a question of when and who.

By the way, I have recently become a director of a large Russian phosphorous/fertilizer company, partly for the reasons you’re discussing.

Jim Rogers : We Are going to have Economic hard Times again

Jim Rogers : We're going to have economic hard times again. Next time it will be worse because the debt is so much higher and because for the first time in recorded history, all major central banks are printing huge amounts of money. So there's this gigantic artificial ocean of liquidity that's going to dry up some day, and when it does, we're all going to pay a terrible price.

Jim Rogers Files a LawSuite Against Russian Laura Alexis

This might be the worst investment Jim Rogers ever made.

The globetrotting tycoon — known for his spiffy bow ties as well as his investing acumen — has accused a San Diego woman of attempted extortion in a business deal gone bad, The Post has learned.

In civil court papers filed last week, Rogers alleges that Laura Alexis, “a self-professed ‘media consultant’ of Russian descent,” threatened his health and reputation as she demanded that he fork over “large sums of money.”
